You’ll find lots of ebooks online that you can buy or download for free, but if you don’t have a dedicated eReader, how can you read them? Fire up an ebook reader app on your phone or tablet. So what makes a good ebook reader? For general use, a clear layout and the ability to sync your bookshelf across multiple devices, note-taking and bookmarks, and for anyone who sometimes struggles with their eyesight, text-to-speech and one-click font customization are welcome additions. These are particularly good for readers who want to reference texts in their work, add annotations, or refer to online resources.

Ideally, you would want to use this on a full-sized updated iPad (iOS7 or later). You don’t need a special device like a Kindle thanks to the many free ebook readers available for your desktop and any other devices that you have. I used it on an iPad mini, which works but is a bit small. You can buy this app for iOS at this link. (Check out my free collection of emergent readers and also visit the site Reading A-Z for affordable leveled books.) What do you need to use Rhyme to Read?

When you use Rhyme to Read alongside leveled readers, your child will learn phonics, sight words, and how to read for meaning. Leveled books give children the opportunity to think about what would make sense and what would sound right grammatically. Unlike phonetic readers, leveled books have many words which children may not be able to sound out - but they can use picture and context clues. I do urge you to use Rhyme to Read alongside leveled readers.

The sight word component is also important so that children aren’t frustrated trying to sound out words that simply can’t be. When you pay $5.99, you get every single book! Do I recommend Rhyme to Read?Ībsolutely! Phonetic books are important because they give our children the visual tools they need to decipher harder words. But with the added sight words and charming illustrations, the authors of Rhyme to Read have succeeded in creating the most engaging stories possible.Ĩ) The app is a great value. It’s difficult to write a good story within a phonetic reader. If they’re unsure of a word, they can press it and hear the word pronounced correctly.ħ) The stories are the best you can hope for with phonetic readers. But kids can easily use Rhyme to Read independently. You’ll also find a list of the word families that have been taught.Ħ) Since we limit our kids’ screen time and prefer that they use even educational apps right alongside us, I used this app alongside my preschooler. At the end of each book you can view the sight words that have been introduced so far. In this way, the books teach your child to read a particular word family instead of merely giving practice.ĥ) Another great feature of the app is that it includes 35 sight words. This really helps kids who are struggling because it gives them confidence before diving into the sentences. After reading these, your child moves on to reading the words within sentences. I was amazed at how quickly he caught on to the word families with the color as a cue!Ĥ) I really like how each page begins with the word family words in a vertical column. My almost-four-year-old is just starting to sound out words. Why is this useful? It provides a prompt for kids who will recognize that familiar word family and begin reading it automatically. Each word family is its own color (as in b at, c at, and r at). The books were designed for the youngest readers and also older readers in need of remediation.ģ) I love the color-coded feature. Have your child start with book number one and move to the next book as he’s ready. In Rhyme to Read, each of the 20 books is focused on a particular short vowel word family: at, an, ad, am, en, et, ed, ell, it, ig, id, ip, ot, og, ock, op, un, ub, uck, and ug.Ģ) The twenty books start simple and gradually become more complex. Instead of laboriously sounding out each letter, they find the first sound and attach it to a familiar word family name. Word families help children find predictable patterns within words. In fact, they beat any phonetic readers I’ve seen in print! I’ll share eight reasons why.ġ) The best part of Rhyme to Read is that it teaches reading with word families.

Rhyme to Read’s books are the very best kind of phonetic readers.

Using their knowledge and experience they have created a fabulous teaching tool for both beginning and struggling readers. That is certainly the case with Rhyme to Read! Both Klaiman and Hines have advanced degrees and have held a variety of teaching positions. Usually this means that the program was carefully designed with real children in mind. Whenever I hear about a resource that was created by teachers, my ears perk up.
